its your job to provide insurance not the dealers you are under the wrong impression

Your impressions are wrong. The buyer/owner is responsible for his own insurance.

If you already have an insurance policy on another vehicle all you have to do is call your agent and tell him you just bought a car. Give him the make, model, year and VIN and you’ll be covered.

No such thing as Temporary Insurance at least not in my State of Washington.

You have to Provide Proof of Insurance

Or they contact the Financer who sends you a bill for insurance.

The dealer does not provide insurance. That’s something you have to do on your own.

Then you were under the wrong impression. Dealers sell cars, and insurance agents sell insurance. To drive the car after buying it, you need to have insurance in place. To have the police in place when you buy the car, just tell your agent you are looking. Once you find the car you want to buy, give the agent the year, make, model and VIN. He will fax your proof of insurance to the dealer while you are signing papers, and you will be legal to drive when you are handed the keys.

You are under a severely mistaken impression. The dealer NEVER gives you insurance. Most dealers won’t allow you off the lot with the vehicle if you don’t show proof of insurance. All that the temp tags allow you to do is drive it for the 15 to 30 days that they’re valid. YOU must buy your own insurance BEFORE you drive off the lot!

Tags are so you can drive on public roads legally, has nothing to do with insurance.

It is your responsibility to insure your car.

You can apply and pay for insurance online in 30 minutes. So go do it.

    Sloooow down everyone.

First off, yes, you need insurance to drive off the lot. And no, it is never included by the dealer.

    BUT

If you already own a car and that car has full coverage insurance, then your insurance company will often automatically cover any new car purchase. The period of time is up to the insurance company, so check with them. I have AAA, and I am automatically covered for up to 10 days on any new car I buy.

    AND

many car dealers are sub-agents, authorized to sell insurance binders. A binder is a temporary insurance policy, typically for 30 days. A binder is not free, not included, you must buy it and pay for it at the time of the car purchase. Binders typically run about $200 for 30 days.

EDIT – give me all the “Thumbs Down” you want. I have been a dealer for over 10 yrs, going on 15. I have personally sold hundreds of insurance binders to customers who did not have car insurance.

Here is one of the companies I have used:

Just because you have never encountered it, that does not stop it being real.

Once you buy the car, the insurance is your problem. Never heard of “temp insurance. Good one, though.
